Choosing the Right Cabinets – Stock, Semi-custom, Custom

There are 3 types of cabinets Semi-custom, Stock, and, Custom cabinets. Semi-custom cabinets offer more interior fittings (accessories), and a wider range of finishes, styles, and door styles then the Stock cabinets. The simplest way to see many of the differences between Semi-custom and Stock cabinets is to request the catalogs and brochures for the two different types of cabinets. Perhaps a primer in the subject is in order, for some of you non-technical home owners. Stock cabinets could be like the ones you find at IKEA. These cabinets happen to be standards sizes and they are in the knock down form. Knock down form means they come disassembled and someone has to put them together. The other Stock cabinet could be akin to the Sears garage cabinets which come in boxes mostly assembled. These are many times in a steel finish.

You can find both types of cabinets sold at stores like Home Depot or Lowes. These stores also hold the convenience of having them already assembled for you at your time of purchase. It is made easy for you to simply fasten the cabinets to the wall and install the hardware. (Make sure you find a stud for the fastener) Local Kitchen remodeling contractors typically have all three options available for their clients; Stock, Semi-custom and Custom cabinets.

Stock cabinets don’t have the dividers, dish trays, trash holders; roll out drawers, sliding shelves etc. They have a limited species of woods, stain colors and door styles. Also, their hardware is typically not the best. Their drawers often do not have full extension guides, or soft or self closing mechanisms. The soft closing doors and self closing drawer are the trends in new cabinets. If you don’t have them, then of course, you don’t know what you are missing, but, once you get them you won’t ever want to do without. They are quiet, easier and faster to close. My wife and I don’t like seeing doors left open. Now, with just a tap of the hand the doors and drawers close automatically. Semi-custom cabinets have the above luxuries’ for their cabinets, plus many more styles, colors to choose from.

One thing to consider is where these cabinets were made. Some cabinets made outside our country use high levels of formaldehyde in their woods which creates off gases in the rooms where they are installed. On June 10, 2011, the US National Toxicology Program described formaldehyde as “known to be a human carcinogen”

At Randal G. Winter Construction Inc. we are a dealer for the “Diamond” Brand cabinets. We are also a dealer for the “Custom Cupboards” Brand cabinets. These Semi-custom cabinets are the best available. We don’t sell or install cabinets containing high levels of formaldehyde. In fact, we either make our own cabinets, or order Diamond Brand or Custom Cupboards Brand. Both Diamond and Custom Cupboards are certified by the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) for sound environmental management and sustainable manufacturing practices. The ESP seal reflects Diamond’s and Custom Cupboard’s continued commitment to achieving and maintaining sustainability in areas such as air quality (low-formaldehyde-emitting composite wood), resource management and environmental stewardship.
